Curtain Alternatives

I have been looking for ways on how to dispose the small and unpopular sizes of stickers (this is our business by the way). At the moment we just rolled them up again waiting for future uses.

As I changed the curtains in the kids room, I realized that I could actually stick these stickers in the window glass. These windows are actually a headache for me as my boys always manage to break the curtain holder.. boys are boys you know! Clumsy as always!

Oh great! Good Idea! So I took the scrap stickers and stick in the window glass. Two birds with one stone kumbaga! Small scrap stickers and the windows in the kids room.

Investing in Gold Coins

So many investing opportunities have sprouting now a days. College plan, life insurance, stock market, gold, antiques and other investment opportunities. Many of them are scammed or if not bankrupt already.

A German national, a millionaire, whom I know only invest in gold. Gold bullion, gold coin, or just about anything as long as it is gold. I once asked him, "Why gold? Why not stock market or other investment?" He answered, "only in gold that your investment is safe". Safe against inflation, stock market downfall and world conflicts.

As I searched through the net, I have found a site which offers genuine gold coins - Gold Coins Gain. And what a coincidence, the German national is buying from that company already!

With the world recession now, almost all commodities, machines, properties, differentiated. But gold is still gold.

As the old adage said : Time is Gold! Time is precious. Indeed, gold is precious!

Best Western Pu Dong Sunshine Hotel, Shanghai

Finally, I can now quietly review Best Western Pudong Sunshine Hotel. This is where we stayed in our first night in Shanghai.

I booked this hotel through Best Western worldwide reservation numbers.

PHILLIPINES
Telephone: 00 800 00 131779 (Toll Free)
Fax: (66 2) 654-1414

Though I talked to an English speaking operator, I could sense that English is not really his mother tongue. He is just pretending to be an American. Since I called the Philippine hotline number so I was expecting to talk to a local. Though I asked him if he is a Filipino but he kept on talking to me in English. The booking was fast and accurate.

Don't be confused in booking since there are 4 Best Western hotel in Shanghai:

1. Best Western Longmen Hotel
2. Best Western Pudong Hotel
3. Best Western Pudong Sunshine Hotel
4. Best Western Ruit Hotel

On the way to the hotel, the taxi driver got lost. Hahaha. Best Western Pudong Sunshine Hotel is located in the heart of the Jinqiao Export Zone.

The hotel is within 10 minutes drive to Shanghai New International Expo Centre, 30 minutes to downtown area, 20 minutes drive to Lujiazui Financial District, 30 minutes drive to Pudong International Airport, 30 minutes drive to Xintiandi and 5 minutes drive to Carrefour.

One thing I like about this hotel is that they offer shuttle service to the expo.

The hotel features free high-speed internet, cable tv, refrigerator (of course), coffee maker, hairdryer. I guess we were lucky that night as we were upgraded to their executive rooms - really nice!

Their breakfast is really good! Lots of selection, both chinese and continental foods. Lots of fruits too!

Update on Cinderella Shoes

After a month, I finally received the other wrong pair. Happy? of course yes because I will have 2 pairs of this kinky shoes.. one silver and one gold!

But to my disappointment, the other pair is again wrong.

Silver - Size 240 is okay. Both the same size

Gold - Left size 235 and right size 230.

Should I get angry? Should I call and scold them again? Is it worth it? Definitely not! So I chose to laugh.

Smile and just spread the word smile!

Modi Operandi

I got the Village Newsletter today. Read it first instead of the usual Philstar Newspaper. They have featured the different kinds of modus operandus which I want to share it with you. Believe me, I already discussed this matter with our 3 household help.

Our shop in Mandaluyong was once victimized by the Budol-Budol Gang. Good enough that it was early morning so wala pang sales. But still, they were able to get the company sun phone.

I suggest that you share these with the members of your household, office and your own community.

KOTONG OR SHORT-CHANGING
The common victims are foreigners, OFM's and their dependents who are lured into exchanging their foreign currency into pesos at rates higher than the prevailing price. During the scam, they money counted and re-counted while the perpetrator or his partner tries to distract the attention of the victim. The latter would find out only later about the shortage long after the rascals are gone.

DUGO-DUGO
This usually happens only when the master(s) of the house is out of the house. The maid receives a phone call with the voice-alike of the master or another member of the family relating that he is involved in an accident or is being held by authorities for an offense. The caller would instruct the maid to get as much money or valuables which she could find in the house for the hospital bills or bail to be posted. If the maid would express doubt about the caller's voice, the latter usually has the skills to give pressure for the former to eventually agree and follow instructions. The usual step is for the maid to meet a certain person in a designated place to hand over the money or valuables. The rest is sad history for the master upon his return to his house.

BUDOL-BUDOL
The potential victims are usually people who have just withdrawn money from the bank or those coming from the more affluent group. The prey is first approaced by a "probinsyano" (an innocently-looking person from the countryside) asking for help to buy something. He shows bundles of money to the victim and appeals for compassion. He would claim unfamiliarity with the style of urban transactions and is afraid of falling prey to criminal elements. A helper of the perpetrator, commonly called "urot", appears to help plead the case for the "probinsyano".

The victim would be promised an attractive percentage of the proceeds. More ploys would employed to gain his confidence. Once convinced, the victim would be asked to shell out 1/3 of the "probinsyano's" cash value as insurance.. The "probinsyano's" money is then locked in a bag and the victim's money likewise in another bag. The bags exchanged leaving the keys in the possession of the "probinsyano". The suspects then leave with the poor dupe holding a bag of worthless bundles of paper.

GOLD BARS
The tactic is for the syndicate to tell the victim about the story of World War II treasures plundered by the Japanese Army. Part of the plot includes a Japanese survivor or a Filipino laborer who has knowledge of the treasure's location. A genuine gold bar is then presented to the victim using the ploy that the treasures plundered by the retreating Japanese army are yet to be recovered. Using great skills through sweet-talk, the syndicate would negotiate for a price smaller than the claimed value of the treasure. Once the negotiation succeeds, the victim would soon discover that the genuine gold bar has been exchanged with a gold-plated lead bar.

FAKE RING
This scam usually employs minors who play the role of someone who accidentally picks up a diamond ring from the pavement. The right has a price tag indicating its value in thousand of pesos. The ring is actually gold plated with glass "diamonds". You can imagine the rest of the swindling act.

BUNTIS-BUNTIS
This is variant of the Fake Ring and Budol-Budol. A woman would claim being rape victim of her master. She would pretend stealing valuables from her master in retaliation and to pay for her treatment, transportation back home, etc. Another sad story for the dupe!

DELIVERY SCAM
The syndicate rents a house or office complete with signboards, telephone, fax machine, etc. Their usual targets are offices with slow-moving sales operations since they are easy to convince in accepting post-dated checks or POs. They make bulk orders of valuable items for delivery to the newly rented office. The agreed delivery date is on a Friday or Saturday. After deliveries have been completed, this will signal the start for the syndicate to move out of the area bringing with them the newly delivered items.

PYRAMID SCAM
This is common highly sophisticated form of luring people to invest their hard-earned savings. One should never get involved in any scheme that promises very high interest rates or returns on investments. It is not only illegal and a risky proposition. The victim unwittingly becomes part of the conspiracy.

LIPAT-BAHAY
A group of well-dressed persons roams inside subdivisions where they target houses that are occupied only at certain times of the day. Once they have surveyed the area and have confirmed that a house is without occupant, they would use a jeepney or van to divest the house of all its valuable contents. The group is so skilled and their movement well planned so that even the neighbors would not suspect anything unusual in their "hakot" activities.

AKYAT BAHAY
This literally means second-story artists. They possess the agility of scaling walls, perimeter fences, roofs, etc. They look for any opening as a means of entrance into the house proper. They go out with their loot thru the same path or thru the main doors of the house.

LAGLAG BARYA
This is a variant of pick pocketing and a common occurrence inside a public utility vehicle. A group of at least 2 people position themselves near their prey. One of them would drop on the floor some coins or pieces of valuable items. While the victim is bending over to help retrieve the coins or items, the others expertly get the victim's wallet from the back pockets. In case this technique fails and the victim starts to resist, the whole group would held up the victim at knife point.

China's Trip and Tips

Philippine Airlines has a daily flights to Shanghai, China. This time, we have booked our flight and get a China visa from our travel agency King of Travel in Makati.

We arrived in Shanghai via Philippine Airlines safe and sound. But before leaving the plane, we had to go through the Chinese-way of checking the body's temperature. Sorry but the photo is not good, I was ashamed to take out my camera so I just secretively took the photo from my phone. They looked like Aliens who are lost in space. We couldn't help but laugh. We have to wait for at least 15 minutes as they have to point their laser gun at our forehead. I mean, is that really necessary?

Pudong International Airport is impressive. Really nice! Amazingly nice!

After immigration, we headed to the Maglev station - a German-developed magnetic-levitation, the world's fastest, most futuristic passenger line.

Cost for Maglev is RMB 50 for one way, RMB 80 for round trip. We took the round trip. Start from Pudong Internatinal Airport to Longyang Road. From there, you have to take a taxi going to your hotel.

Then we checked in Best Western Pudong Sunshine Hotel. Reasonable hotel but its quite far from the city center and the expo. So the following day, we transferred to Novotel Atlantis. Will post my reviews of both hotels soon.

Honestly, I was not really pleased with my trip as I was not able to buy anything. I wanted to go to their market but to no avail. Its not easy to just go around as the taxi drivers dont speak English. You have to get a card from your hotel and ask them to write in Chinese characters wherever you go. Poor mama mia!

China Sign Fair 2009

Two days after our Iloilo trip, went to Shanghai, China to attend the China Sign Fair 2009 at the Shanghai International Expo. The New Shanghai Expo is really big, biggest expo I have attended although Chinese exhibitors were saying that the business is bad due to world recession. One of the indication was that only few European and American attended the expo. But amazingly, a lot of Indians were there. Indian community is promising as what the Chinese are saying.

Shanghai Expo

Car Wrap
We went to China for this. We are a distributor of digital printing materials in Manila and we are looking for additinal products to carry.

Big LCD Screen - same technology in Guadalupe bridge but bigger and brighter. I did not check the price as this is not related in our business. But I heard price is around Php 4,000,000. True or not?

Mongolian Tent
This is an alternative to warehousing. Instead of renting a warehouse, why not rent an empty space and install this tent? Of course bigger tent! Great savings. One of our friends already bought a tent to try it out.

Ibis Hotel Semarang

While I was in Indonesia, we had a side trip to Semarang on the way to Jakarta. Our client booked us at the Ibis Semarang Hotel.

Room with wifi. King bed. Nice set up. Clean.

The hotel is relatively new, all are still fresh.. yes, fresh towels too! But dont worry, I did not get anything from the hotel as what most of my friends are doing. I must admit in my early 20's, I used to bring some new towels especially from 5 star hotels.. Thats my long time secret! Ha ha..

Back to this hotel, the staff are friendly and the food is okay. Nothing spectacular, just the usual buffet breakfast!

Bathroom. I like the colorful tiles so much! Very clean.

Guess what how much we paid? Only USD 33.00 per night with free buffet. I was told they are on promotional offer.
